Can a renter serve as an HOA board member in California?
There is currently no law in California that prohibits renters from serving on the HOA board. However, many HOAs have their own rules concerning this matter. Board member qualifications will typically be outlined within the bylaws of your association, and a majority of associations only allow owners (or non-renters) to run for board positions. Absent such a provision in your governing documents, an argument can be made that a renter can serve on the HOA board. In the end, the best way to know if renters are allowed to serve in your particular board is to check your governing documents.
