Arlington is a county in the Virginia commonwealth, located on the west side of the Potomac River near Washington D.C.. Arlington is, contrary to popular belief, a county that has no incorporated towns or cities within it. Originally a part of the area set aside for the country’s capital in 1791 , the land was returned to Virginia by Congress in 1846 and was known at the time as Alexandria County. This led to some confusion within the territories. This issue was resolved in 1920, when Alexandria County renamed itself Arlington County, deriving the nomenclature from the Arlington National Cemetery, a cemetery that was established during the Civil War on the grounds of General Robert E. Lee’s former home, Arlington House.

Most people associate Arlington Virginia with the Pentagon, The Iwo Jima Memorial, and Arlington National Cemetery, however it is also an important area of employment. Over 200,000 jobs in the area are provided by the federal government, though some large tech companies account for a good amount of employment as well, some of which are fortune 500 firms.

Per a 2016 study, Arlington Virginia’s population was 230,050. The land encompasses 26 square miles and has been referred to as a “suburb” of DC. With rising property values over the last few years, owners and community board members are seeking to preserve or maintain the look and value of their properties.
