Neighbor Disputes Over Tree Debris

Question:

A homeowner called me to ask me a question because I was previously a board member. He has pine trees in his yard and the needles that go into his neighbor’s yard, the neighbor is blowing them back. He is angry, he feels the pine needles that are in the neighbors yard, he should clean them up himself. I told him it was a neighbor dispute and they should settle it themselves. Is that the correct answer?

Answer:

Hi Lenore,

Neighbors are often encouraged to settle disputes among themselves first. Property owners are typically responsible for maintaining their own yards, including the cleanup of naturally occurring debris like leaves, needles, or small branches that fall from neighboring trees.

If the situation escalates or if the HOA has specific regulations regarding property maintenance and neighbor disputes, it’s best to consult the governing documents and the HOA board.
