Resident Unsatisfied With HOA in Washington

Question:

I feel sorry for folks with HOAs. My HOA fee is $435 a month for nothing! My lawn is the size of a postage stamp. The HOA covers mowing! I have no back yard! Supposed to be a 55 and over community and there are several young elementary age kids here. They can’t play in the streets, sidewalks, and can’t ride bikes, skate, or play catch! We have no amenities at all! No swimming pool, play ground, or club house! The condos are all 2 story and they don’t do windows. Fifty five and you need to climb a later( I don’t think so!!) So you have to pay to have them done? We were told we (76 units) all need to paint our own garage doors, they took away our cable tv. I have lived here 28 years and the only improvement they have made is new siding in all that time. Don’t tell me to move, I’m 73!!! Someone needs to govern these outfits!!! Ours is Targa in Federal Way Washington. I don’t mind a HOA fee if they do something to earn it!!!!

Answer:

Hi Ellen,

If you are unsatisfied with your HOA or the way it’s being run, it is best to take your concerns to your HOA board or community manager. You can send them a message or voice your concerns at the next board meeting. To make a more impactful difference, you may also want to run for a position on the board in the next election. This way, you can make real change.
