A condo shooting in Brannon Hill has left a pregnant woman and her baby in critical condition. Residents of the condo complex now fear for their safety.

A Long-Persisting Problem

A shooting at a DeKalb County condo complex in early February has resulted in two victims: a pregnant woman and her newborn baby. Both remain in critical condition. And residents say this is not the first time they have felt unsafe in their neighborhood.

According to Brannon Hill resident Betty Tamrat, the conditions at her condo complex have been below average for quite some time now. Tamrat has a hard time feeling calm and relaxed, even fearing going outside her home.

On Thursday morning, DeKalb County Police arrived at the condo complex at approximately 5:45 a.m. When they got there, they found that a pregnant woman had been the victim of a condo shooting.

Another Brannon Hill resident, Deana, recounted the events to local news.

“I heard the gunshots, and I went to get up, and he said stay down, stay down, don’t get up,” she said, remembering her husband had advised her to take cover when it all happened. “I’m blown away; I’m surprised. I shocked. I’m very sick to my stomach.”

Not the First Time

The Brannon Hill condo complex has long struggled with crime. In the past two years alone, the complex saw the kidnapping of a baby, a fire that obliterated eight units, and several other shootings.

County officials are aware of the problems plaguing the condo. They are working on a plan to revitalize the neighborhood and increase safety for residents.

“We are trying to get it to be a better place to stay to make it more safe,” Community Development Director Allen Mitchell said, adding that they have been working on the area over the years. These projects included blight and debris removal, the addition of surveillance cameras, and the provision of nourishment.

While residents praise the efforts, they are clamoring for more. And it looks like they will be getting their wish, with the county setting aside $100,000 in funds to revitalize the community.

DeKalb County police are still investigating the incident. As of now, they have yet to identify a suspect or motive.
