My first ESA letter was rejected by my HOA, which claimed that the provider couldn’t be verified in the state licensing database. Two months of back-and-forth and I was exhausted.
Following that rejection, I researched the Fair Housing Act. When you have a letter from a verifiable licensed mental health professional and a documented disability-related need, HOAs are required to approve reasonable accommodation requests. The majority of people trip over that final section.
My ESA Therapist was suggested by a friend. This was a genuine interview with a certified therapist who inquired about my mental health history and how my ESA improves my day-to-day functioning, in contrast to the previous service I utilized.
Full license credentials that my HOA could independently verify were supplied in the letter. The second entry was accepted right away.
Your diagnosis is most likely not the issue if your HOA rejected your letter. It’s the caliber of the documentation. When dealing with stringent boards, a well designed letter from a reliable provider makes all the difference.
