Bank Accounts for Unincorporated HOAs in CA

Question:

Where do we register the name of the HOA for bank purposes? Our HOA is not a corporation.

– Marie

Answer:

Hi Marie,

While HOAs may not be corporations in the traditional sense, most HOAs in California still organize as corporations, particularly nonprofit corporations. In that case, you will have to register and file your Articles of Incorporation with the Secretary of State.

That said, some banks support unincorporated associations and allow them to create bank accounts under certain conditions. Banks may also seek additional documentation. It is best to speak to a bank representative to understand the requirements better.
