Question:
Is my HOA allowed to require that we provide them with our vehicle registration in order to be issued a permanent parking sticker? I find that this is insanely intrusive and should not be required in any manner, they are not the state. This is especially problematic because out HOA refuses to get rid of a horrendous towing company that loves to take as many vehicles as they can get away with. On top of that my HOA as failed to inform me of any rules or regulations pertaining to the tracking of the issuance of temporary parking passes, or record keeping standards.

Answer:
Hi Ryan,
If your HOA’s governing documents give it the authority to collect vehicle registration information, then you likely must comply. As for towing, the HOA can generally tow vehicles if they are improperly parked on private roads or spaces. Your HOA might need to provide sufficient notice before towing depending on your CC&Rs. If you wish to secure a copy of the association’s governing documents, you may ask your HOA board or manager to provide you with one.
