Changing Member Name in California HOA

Question:

My condominium HOA is under my maiden name and my mothers name because 31 years ago we bought it together. I’ve been married and never changed my name on the HOA. I’m divorced but I’m still using my married name. Recently I overpaid my HOA dues electronically. I asked the property management billing team to return the overpayment to my account but they didn’t. Instead they wrote two checks for the amount equaling $940. to me as my maiden name and my mother name who is 86 years old has glaucoma and is very frail and living with my sister about 100 miles away. I took the check to Bank of America and signed my name then under it I signed my maiden name. When the teller took it and looked at it she said she needs to have the other person there as well. So the next day I went and picked up mom to endorse the check in front of teller to deposit it into moms account because it was easiest. Please tell me how do I change my name with the HOA?

Answer:

Hi Lisa,

I advise you to take this up with your homeowners association. Let your board or HOA manager know that you wish to change your name as it appears on their records. They might ask you to provide supporting documentation depending on the requirements of your HOA.
