Does the Board Get Paid a Management Fee in WV?

Question:

My HOA has changed hands as far as the board goes and they’re now charging a quarterly management fee and we never had that before. Is that a thing that they’re allowed to do? I’m just asking
My name is Chanda Wright and I live in Martinsburg West Virginia
Thank you

Answer:

Hi Chanda,

Board members are not generally paid for their services. They are volunteer homeowners who choose to serve on the board. That said, make sure to check your governing documents for confirmation.

It is also possible that the management fee you’re referring to is the fee paid to an HOA management company. An HOA management company is a separate entity whose job is to help the board manage the community. Management companies provide many different services, and they charge a regular management fee for their services. Perhaps your HOA board chose to hire a management company to assist them with the community’s needs.
