Governing Agencies Over Maryland HOAs

Question:

Is their a committee or organization that the HOA of a community has to answer to for wrong doing and/or mismanagement?

Answer:

Hi,

Depending on the action or violation, an HOA may be answerable to:

1. U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development – for enforcing the Fair Housing Act
2. United States Department of Justice Civil Rights Division – for civil rights laws
3. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau – for enforcing the Federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act
4. Maryland Collection Agency Licensing Board – for licensing of collection agencies

The County of Prince George and Montgomery County may also help with dispute resolution in HOAs. But, there is no state agency in Maryland that governs HOAs.
