HOA Prohibiting Security Door Installation in Tennessee

Question:

My HOA says I can not add a security door to my home. Can they prevent me from installing a security door on my home for safety?

– Mark

Answer:

Hi Mark,

A homeowners association generally does have the ability to regulate and restrict architectural changes to your home, including the installation of a security door. That said, check your governing documents to confirm this authority. Your governing documents should be able to tell you what powers your HOA has in terms of enforcing architectural standards. Your documents should also tell you what kind of architectural changes are permitted or not permitted.
