It depends on your HOA’s governing documents. If membership is mandatory in your HOA, then a homeowner can’t stop being a member. The only way to end your membership is to sell your home and cease being a homeowner in the community. For most HOAs, membership is mandatory. But, if membership is optional in an HOA, you may be able to separate from the association by following the process outlined in the governing documents.
