How to Stop Condo from Raising Dues in Washington

Question:

Can a COA be stopped from raising excessive dues? We are charged a much higher rate than other complexes that actually have amenities.
Can they be fired by the building?

– Chad

Answer:

Hi Chad,

Washington law currently does not dictate a limit or maximum rate an HOA can raise its dues. However, homeowners do need to ratify the budget at a budget ratification meeting. If homeowners vote down the budget, the board must come up with a new budget. You should also check your CC&Rs to see if they restrict dues increases in your association.

If you’re unsatisfied with your board, you might consider removing board members. You can do this according to your bylaws and RCW 64.34.308(8).
