Is it Legal to Have No Written Vendor Contracts?

Question:

For the State of Iowa:
Hi,
I am a new Board member of a condominium complex in Iowa.
I was just informed there are no written contracts with the:
1. snow removal company
2. rubbish removal company
3. Landscaping company

The only written contract the Board has is with the Management company.
And the Management Company has no written contracts with the above three companies.

Is this legal in Iowa, that there are no written contracts with the 3 3 above companies with the Management Company and / or the Board of Directors?

I Thank You now for your answers.

– Joel

Answer:

Hi Joel,

It may not be illegal to have a verbal agreement with vendors. However, it’s best to have a written contract for all the vendors the association works with. Otherwise, it may result in financial and legal liability. For further guidance, kindly consult a lawyer.
