Is Our Board Stealing from the HOA?

Question:

We have a non-elected person running our HOA. I have lived in my house for more than 14 years and have paid my dues diligently. Nothing has ever been done to our property, or anything, as long as I have lived here. I have never received information on where our money is going. I KNOW we are being stolen from.

And without notice, our dues DOUBLED starting January 2023. Absolutely no ratification, justification, anything!

I am looking for advice. Do I fork out even more money to hire an attorney? What can be done? There are 12 other families with the exact same issue.

Thank you,

– Christine

Answer:

Hi Christine,

You may request your HOA for a copy of the association’s financial records, as Washington law stipulates here and hereRCW 64.90.525 also requires budget ratification within 30 days after the adoption of any proposed budget.

If you are unsatisfied with your board, you may remove board members from their position by following RCW 64.90.520. More requirements and procedures may be found within your HOA’s bylaws. If you believe that a financial crime has occurred, report it to your local authorities.
