Multiple Estimates for Vendors and Homeowner Maintenance

Question:

I am a home owner in the Villas At Tanglewood Cove Subdivision.
Our Board President is resistant to open conversations about getting 2 or more estimates for large ticket items like major land-scaping. The board will not contact homeowners regarding home needing maintenance work, such as mildew, chipping paint overall neglect. Our Bylaws are clear. I do try to keep my own home in good condition.

Answer:

Hi Roslyn,

Kindly review the governing documents to verify whether or not the board is required to obtain multiple estimates for maintenance work. If so, you may raise this with the HOA president. As for neglected homes, kindly review the community’s rules and architectural standards to verify what the homeowners’ responsibilities are when it comes to upkeep. If the homeowners are in violation, you may raise this with the board by contacting them directly or bringing it up at a board meeting.

If the board is unresponsive, you may engage in dispute resolution or remove the problem board member(s). For further guidance, kindly consult a lawyer.
