No Pets Policy in Connecticut Condo

Question:

What can an HOA do to enforce a no dog policy if you suddenly have a dog? My daughters fiancé has moved in with her and he has a dog. She owns the condo. Can they force her to sell her condo and move out?

Answer:

Hi Tracy,

A condo association in Connecticut generally has the ability to prohibit pets from the community. This prohibition, though, should be included in the association’s governing documents. If such a prohibition exists, the association may also have the authority to force the owner to comply with the rule and remove the pet from the premises. Failure to comply with the association’s rules can result in penalties, including monetary ones, depending on the governing documents of the condo.
