Political Signs in California HOAs

Can an HOA here in California prohibit me from play a political sign in my yard or in a window.

– David

Answer:

Hi David,

An HOA in California cannot prohibit political signs on or in an owner’s separate interest. This includes your yard and windows. However, HOAs can restrict signs made of certain materials such as balloons, roofing, paving materials, lights, and more. They can also prohibit signs that “are more than nine square feet in size or flags or banners that are more than 15 square feet in size” as well as “signs, posters and flags displaying obscenity or fighting words.” Generally, associations can also restrict the number of political signs a homeowner can display. That being said, associations can prohibit all political signs in common areas.
