Problem With Board Member Behavior

Question:

I am the only female on the board of our HOA. In our last closed session, I raised a concern re: lack of transparency in the management company’s handling of our finances. For this, I was verbally attacked, berated and insulted by my colleagues to the point that, out of concern for my personal safety, I had to exit the room. Our board president failed to intervene, & instead, joined in. Since that meeting, no apologies or efforts have been made to implement “stops” for inappropriate behavior.
I asked that 2 volunteer owners (non-board members) be present to witness our next meeting in hopes it will temper behavior and enable us to operate more constructively and with a degree of decorum. They are declining to allow it.
Please if you will, advise me as to my options….

Answer:

Hi Jaime,

Executive sessions or closed meetings are generally not open to non-board members. That being said, if you have a problem with how your fellow board members behave, it is advisable to speak to them about the issue. You may also wish to go through dispute resolution or ask your HOA attorney to be present at the meeting.
