I live in a community with an HOA, so I was a little concerned when I needed to request an accommodation for my emotional support animal. I had heard different things about whether an HOA could have its own rules regarding pets.

Before contacting the HOA management, I made sure I had my ESA documentation in order. I had completed an evaluation through My ESA Therapist and had an ESA letter explaining the need for the accommodation.

The HOA management initially had some questions because their community rules generally restricted certain pets. I submitted the documentation and explained that I wasn’t simply asking to keep a pet outside of the rules. I was requesting a housing accommodation related to my ESA.

The conversation took a little back and forth, but keeping everything documented and communicating calmly helped. My experience made me realize how important it is to understand the difference between normal pet rules and an ESA accommodation request.
