This is such an important conversation and honestly one that does not get talked about enough in the ESA community.
I think the truth sits somewhere in the middle. ESAs are not a replacement for therapy or proper mental health treatment and there are definitely cases where people lean on them instead of addressing what is really going on underneath. That is a valid concern.
But for a lot of people an ESA is actually what opens the door to getting real help in the first place. When you are in a really dark place the idea of unpacking everything with a therapist can feel completely overwhelming. An ESA meets you where you are, gives you enough stability to breathe, and from that place it becomes a little easier to take the next step.
That was my experience at least. When my anxiety was at its worst I could barely function. Going through My ESA Therapist to get my ESA letter connected me with a licensed mental health professional who did a real evaluation and that conversation alone made me realize I needed more support than I had been giving myself. The ESA process actually pushed me toward deeper healing rather than away from it.
So I really do not think ESAs and proper mental health treatment are opposites. The problem only arises when one is used to avoid the other rather than complement it.
Curious to hear what others think though because I believe this looks different for everyone.
