Condo Fire at Somerset Village in Greensboro

A condominium complex in Greensboro went ablaze on Friday night. Firefighters responded to the call immediately, successfully putting the fire out with no one getting injured.

According to Greensboro police, the fire happened on the 5000 block of Lawndale Drive at Somerset Village Condominiums. Officials had to close down the roads between Regents Park Lane and Cottage Place temporarily, but they are now open once more.

While the condo fire did not injure anyone, according to officials, it did displace several families.

Cause of Fire Still Under Investigation

The Greensboro Fire Department is still investigating the cause of the fire together with Piedmont Natural Gas. Officials believe the fire natural gas contributed to the fire. As such, gas lines and power lines to the condominium have been cut as the investigation continues.

The fire resulted in severe damage to the attic of the condominium building as well as the third floor. It took more than 50 firefighters to finally put the fire out.

Families who have nowhere to go are receiving assistance from the American Red Cross.

Associations Take Caution

Homeowners associations and condominiums should take the proper steps to prepare for the risk of fire. It is imperative to ensure that the association has sufficient fire insurance as premiums for coverage continue to go up. It is also worth developing a fire evacuation plan, as many communities throughout the country have already done.

Currently, it is unclear whether or not Somerset Village Condominiums’ insurance provider will cover the heavy damage. In addition to adequate insurance coverage, associations should also make sure they have properly funded reserves. In doing so, associations can shield themselves and their members from potential financial distress.
