Changing the HOA’s Name in Washington

Question:

I am the president of the Hongel Heights neighborhood HOA in Clark County, WA. We are interested in changing the name of our neighborhood and HOA and need to understand what the process is to do so. Ideally we would like to accomplish this ourselves without assistance from a lawyer if possible. Do you have any recommendations? I know that once we accomplish the name change we will need to file it with our county recording office and most likely notify Google Maps and other parties such as first responders. Thank you.

Answer:

Hi Greg,

Typically, you will need to file your name change with the Secretary of State if your association is incorporated. This also usually involves amending your Articles of Incorporation and other governing documents to reflect the change. Amending your documents, though, may require a vote from the membership as stipulated by the Washington Common Interest Ownership Act or by your governing documents.
