Strength in numbers is a powerful tool. If you decide to organize a meeting, make sure to stay calm, collected, and focused on the issues. A united front can often lead to better communication with the HOA.

I’ve had my fair share of clashes with HOAs, too. They can be a bit overzealous sometimes. Share the deets, and maybe we can brainstorm some creative solutions or find a loophole in the rules. 😉

There are some companies that offer only financial management assistance. You don’t have to get the full package.

Might I suggest hiring an HOA management company instead? Unless your board has experience with accounting, using an accounting software won’t really help you a lot. You still need to have a grasp on basic accounting principles.

JMancini, you’re right. What you described is selective enforcement. I would confront your board about selective enforcement if I were you. If that doesn’t work, you can file a complaint with your state. There should be a department that governs homeowners associations. You may also want to ask a lawyer for advice. Godspeed!

I live in Texas and we have solar access rights here. That means HOAs here, by law, can’t prohibit us from installing solar panels. I had to go through a detailed application process, though, but I got them installed in the end.

Not sure where you live, but perhaps your state has its own laws for going solar? As far as I know, nearly half of states have passed their own version of solar access laws.

We had the same problem 2 years ago and majority homeowners voted to put up gates. I can tell you right now that all that resulted in were a) SIGNIFICANTLY higher dues and b) annoyance.

Installation itself cost TENS OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS and the annual maintenance/repairs added THOUSANDS more. People would forget their codes and passes which made it more DIFFICULT and FRUSTRATING to get through our morning commutes. Not to mention that it gave people a false sense of security even though I SWEAR I noticed more trespassers coming in and casing our homes.

I am a strong advocate of NO GATES and I advise you to do the same.
