In my humble opinion, having deliberate and transparent procedures is crucial.

It’s understandable that receiving a violation notice can provoke a negative reaction from most people, and it sounds like your situation is particularly unsettling. I recommend initiating a conversation with him, or if you’re uncomfortable doing so, enlisting the help of another Board member. If his harassment persists, it’s appropriate to request that he stop and make it clear that any further disturbances will necessitate involving the authorities by filing a formal complaint.

Completely legal, I think. Condos can enforce reasonable rules like that. That’s just how it is. Although I do think it’s a weird rule. But I guess your condo is just conservative, that’s all.

I just drove past a house with – guest what – security cameras! Surprise, surprise. If someone else can do it, then why can’t I?

Besides, it’s my house and I’m not hurting anyone so I don’t see why I can’t put in cameras.

I don’t think I’m violating any privacy laws. As I said,my cameras are only facing my front lawn and sidewalk and the other one is attached to the doorbell so we can see who’s at the door. How is that any concern of my neighbors??

They didn’t say anything about the cameras violating the architectural standards nor did they ask me to go through the application procedure. The letter just says I violated the “rules” of the HOA and that I have until the end of the week to take the cameras down. I paid a lot of money for them so I don’t plan on wasting that.

Some examples that come to mind include prohibiting short-term rentals (anything below 30 days) and requiring through tenant screenings. Those two really helped with the whole stranger danger problem.

I am absolutely on the side of your HOA on this. And this is coming from firsthand experience. I was on the board of my HOA a few years ago when we didn’t have rental restrictions in place. Because of the boom of short-term rental apps like Airbnb, our community was seeing tens of strangers coming and going almost every week. It interfered with the spirit and character of the community, as residents would see new faces out on the streets or in the pool area on a nearly regular basis. It was jarring. It wasn’t long before some of our long-term residents complained about these strangers bringing down the appeal and value of the association. Some didn’t feel safe in their own neighborhood anymore because they couldn’t even recognize their neighbors. And not all of these tenants are good tenants either. Some of them blatantly disregarded the community rules. Long story short, we voted to place rental restrictions (which didn’t completely outlaw rentals but only aimed to control them) and our community has been a better place since.

If your state has a law saying your board can’t increase dues by a certain amount or percentage and your board has violated that, then I think you’ve got a pretty strong case. Best of luck to you, Connor.
